Designing Manga Props

Breathing Life Into The Background

Here's your complete Manga Monday sketch blog, along with a printable PDF guide on designing manga props.

Introduction

When we think of drawing manga, our minds often leap straight to expressive characters, dynamic action scenes, and iconic hairstyles. But there’s one aspect that quietly supports every good manga story—and it's often overlooked: props.

Props are the objects your characters interact with: a cracked phone, a glowing pendant, a schoolbag bursting at the seams, or a battered sword. While they may seem like mere background items, props can deeply influence storytelling, world-building, and even character development. In this week’s Manga Monday, we’re shining a light on these unsung heroes and showing you how to design them with intention and impact.

Why Props Matter

Props serve multiple storytelling purposes in manga:

  • They reveal personality: A disorganized artist might carry a pencil case with doodles and mismatched pens. A warrior might keep a charm tied to their sword handle—a hint of a lost loved one.
  • They establish setting: A rustic tea set speaks of tradition; a holographic wristband suggests a high-tech future. The props your characters use ground the reader in your world.
  • They carry symbolism: A necklace handed down through generations. A cracked mirror showing duality. A weapon that’s too heavy for its wielder. Props are visual metaphors waiting to be drawn.

Think of the Death Note in Death Note—not just a notebook, but the engine of the story. Or the maneuver gear in Attack on Titan—a distinct object that shapes action and technology in that universe. Props can become as iconic as the characters themselves.

How to Design Manga Props

Download the free printable PDF guide below that walks you through designing manga props in three essential steps:

📄 Download Manga Props Design Guide (PDF)

In the guide, you’ll find:

  • Step 1: Function – What the prop does and how it serves your story
  • Step 2: Form – How it looks, shaped by the world it exists in
  • Step 3: Feel – How to give it emotional or historical weight
  • Bonus Sketch Tips – Practical drawing advice and design prompts

You can print it and keep it in your sketchbook as a visual reference or warm-up tool.

Closing Thoughts

Props are more than filler—they’re story vessels. The way a sword is wrapped, the stickers on a laptop, or the age of a backpack can say volumes without a single word. As manga artists, we have the power to make every object meaningful.

So the next time you’re sketching a scene, pause and ask yourself:

What’s in their hand, on their desk, or hidden in their bag? That’s where the magic lives.

Manga Monday Drawing Prompts: Prop Edition

To help you practice bringing props to life, try these sketch prompts:

  • 🎒 Draw your character’s favorite item and show how it reflects their personality.
  • 🏺 Reimagine a modern object (like a phone) as a medieval or fantasy item.
  • 🕯️ Create a manga page where an object tells the story with minimal dialogue.
  • 📦 Design a treasure box—what’s inside says everything about the character.
