Enhancing Gesture Drawings For Dynamic Poses

Last week, we explored foundational gesture drawing techniques. This week, we’ll refine dynamic poses to add more life to figures.

This week however I'll make it short and sweet.... dynamic poses are seen as more expressive because of the perspectives provided that we normally never get to see walking around as normal homo sapiens etcetera. This is why we find the use or application of digital 3D models so amazing. We get to rotate them in all sorts of poses we find to be dynamic and then insert them into a scene that supports that dynamic environment.

The more we allow our imaginations to light our way as we go the easier and quicker it is for us to create stories of many lengths for all to enjoy; be they of the comic and serial nature or caricature cartoons.

Now as I implied - let's keep this blog short and sweet and to the 3rd or 4th point of perspective....Use the suggestions below and challenge yourself with the exercise provided!

Making Poses More Expressive

  1. Use Action Lines – A strong, fluid line from head to toe enhances movement.
  2. Exaggerate Silhouettes – Clear, bold shapes make poses readable from a distance.
  3. Weight & Balance – Pay attention to grounded footing and shifting weight for natural movement.

Exercise

Take a basic standing pose and exaggerate it into a dynamic action pose. Compare the two to see the increased energy and impact.
